Spoken by Meursault, the novel’s narratorand protagonist, these are the opening lines of the novel. Theyintroduce Meursault’s emotional indifference, one his most importantcharacter traits. Meursault does not express any remorse upon learningof his mother’s death—he merely reports the fact in a plain andstraightforward manner. His chief concern is the precise day ofhis mother’s death—a seemingly trivial detail.
